This is the beginning of a series of work looking at the elements of a person; our chemical makeup and why the physical properties aren’t enough to create life. I have been exploring the different elements, looking at where I can find them in nature, and combining them in different ways through drawing, sculpture, dying, collecting, printing, and playing with different compounds, with the intention of displaying a separate piece for each element in an installation that would represent the human. When I was exploring nitrogen I found it was in highest concentrations in seeds which fascinated me as I wrote my dissertation on the idea of a ‘cosmic seed’ having the potential to create anything, storing life until it’s ready to come forth into the world. I wanted to take this idea and create human seeds that contain all of the matter that is needed to transform into a person. These human ‘seed pods’ contain the ten most abundant elements in the human body mixed into their shells.
